Cremation

A simple, dignified cremation.

Cremation is the choice most Australian families make. It is usually the more affordable option, and it gives you flexibility over when and how you say goodbye.

What it involves

You still choose how to say goodbye.

Choosing cremation does not mean going without a funeral. You can hold a full service beforehand, gather for a memorial afterwards, or keep things entirely private — the cremation itself is separate from how you choose to remember someone.

Whichever you choose, we take care of the transfer into our care, the preparation, and all the paperwork and permits the crematorium requires. Cremation involves a little more documentation than burial, and that is our job, not yours.

Afterwards the ashes are returned to you, usually within one to two weeks, and what happens next is entirely up to your family.

Your options

Three ways families do this.

  • Cremation without a service

The cremation takes place quietly, with no ceremony. Sometimes called a direct or unattended cremation — it is the simplest and most affordable option, and many families hold their own gathering later.

  • A service, then cremation

Family and friends gather for a service with your loved one present, and the cremation follows afterwards. This is the most common choice.

  • Cremation, then a memorial

The cremation happens first and you hold a memorial when it suits your family. This takes the time pressure off and lets people travel.

How it works

From your first call to the ashes coming home.

Four steps, and we guide you through every one. There is nothing you need to prepare before you call.

  1. You call us

Any hour, any day. We talk through what has happened and what needs to happen next.

  2. We bring them into our care

We collect your loved one from the hospital, nursing home or private residence.

  3. You decide on the service

A full service, a quiet cremation followed by a memorial, or something in between.

  4. The ashes come home

We complete the paperwork, the cremation takes place, and the ashes are returned to you.

Common questions

Cremation questions, answered.

Should we choose cremation or burial?

That is entirely your family’s decision, and often it comes down to what your loved one would have wanted, your beliefs, and cost. Cremation is generally the less expensive option because it does not involve purchasing a burial plot.

We support both, and we are happy to talk through what each one involves without any pressure either way.

Can we still have a service if we choose cremation?

Yes. Choosing cremation does not mean going without a service. You can hold a full service beforehand with your loved one present, or have the cremation take place quietly first and hold a memorial afterwards — which gives family time to travel and takes the pressure off arranging things quickly.

Some families choose no service at all. That is a perfectly valid choice too.

How long until we receive the ashes?

Usually within one to two weeks. The exact timing depends on how quickly the required paperwork is completed and how busy the crematorium is, and we will give you a clearer date once arrangements are underway.

We will let you know as soon as the ashes are ready, and you can collect them from us or we can arrange delivery to you.

What can we do with the ashes?

Whatever feels right for your family. Common choices are keeping them at home in an urn, interring them in a memorial garden or cemetery, scattering them somewhere meaningful, or dividing them between family members.

Rules about scattering vary depending on where you are and who owns the land, so it is worth checking before you plan anything at a specific place. We can point you in the right direction.
